The company my father works for sells weapons used in my partner’s homeland

They make great trucks. That’s what my father says whenever I ask him: “What do they make? Who do they sell them to?” “Only to the good guys,” is his standard answer, and the topic changes quickly. But what he calls “trucks”, most people call “tanks”. And I am always led to wonder, “What kind of ‘good guy’ drives a tank?”

My father works for Thales, one of the richest weapons corporations in the world. Before heading up security for Thales he worked for Asio, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

On a rainy summer’s day in January I learnt that Thales sells weaponised vehicles to Indonesia’s special forces, Kopassus. The same Kopassus that have been accused of terrorising, torturing and murdering the people of West Papua.

My partner is a West Papuan refugee. Half of our children’s family live in West Papua, terrified of Indonesian soldiers, ready to run when Kopassus troops roll into their villages. I was suddenly painfully aware that my father is paid by a company that sells weapons that may be used against his own grandchildren’s family.

I had always suspected that my father’s employer and my partner’s journey might be connected in some way but I had never imagined how horribly entangled their stories were.

Land Forces – Flood Media

On June 1-3, businesses and potential customers will descend on the Brisbane Convention Centre for the LAND FORCES International Land Defence Exposition. At first glance, it might seem like just another industry showcase in the endless cycle of convention-centre events. The promotional material is a masterpiece in euphemistic corporate language, difficult for the outsider to penetrate. “A comprehensive industry exhibition with more than 600 participating companies… Formal business to business networking programs and events… A three-day Industry and Defence Conference Program, built around the themes of: Industry Capability – Equipping Defence; Innovation and Technology for the Future Force; Civil Defence – Preparing for Community Crisis.”

Look through the fog of corporate sales jargon, though, and it’s possible to see what is really being bought and sold at Land Forces. That’s what the group of activists calling themselves Disrupt Land Forces have done. And they have gone further than just identifying that 600 of the world’s biggest weapons manufacturers are getting together to showcase their products. They have been studying where the weapons manufactured in Australia are actually sold, and have found quite a number of them make the short journey across the Timor Sea to Indonesia. War Erodes Our Liberties

War is often justified by claiming that it is in defense of freedom in the home country and is promoting freedom and democracy abroad. This is usually not the case and, in the case of the war on terror, is patently untrue. War not only denies human rights to those people in the countries directly involved in the conflict, but it also often erodes the civil liberties – including the right to freedom of speech & assembly, due process, and protection from unreasonable searches – of the domestic populations of the aggressor countries. Often this is accomplished by first removing rights from people designated as enemies, and later by applying the same standards to others.

1.5% of Global Military Spending Could End Starvation on Earth

The world spends $2 trillion a year on war and preparations for war. That’s not counting the trillions required to clean up the devastating aftermath on communities and the environment.
In 2008, the UN estimated that $30 billion per year could end world hunger. Thus, doing the math: 1.5 % of $2 trillion = $30 billion, meaning that only 1.5% of global military spending could end starvation on earth.

War is Immoral

War is nothing other than murder on a large scale. Over the centuries and decades, death counts in wars have grown dramatically, shifted heavily onto civilians rather than combatants, and been overtaken by injury counts as even greater numbers have been injured but medicine has allowed them to survive. Deaths are now due primarily to violence rather than to disease, formerly the biggest killer in wars. Civilian fatalities in wartime have climbed from 5% at the turn of the 20th century to more than 90% in modern wars. Suicide is now the leading killer of U.S. troops.

It is common to think that, because many people have jobs in the war industry, spending on war and preparations for war benefits an economy. In reality, spending those same dollars on peaceful industries, on education, on infrastructure, or even on tax cuts for working people, would produce more jobs and, in most cases, better paying jobs than would spending that money

Disruptive protest at Brisbane weapons company

The head office of weapons manufacturer Boeing has been occupied by a West Papuan solidarity group in Brisbane today. Activists have erected a memorial to murdered West Papuan civilians in the arms company’s lobby to commemorate over 30 civilian victims of military violence during 2020-21.

Boeing Apache helicopters are currently strafing villages in the Puncak and Intan Jaya regions of West Papua, after Indonesian President Widodo declared a major offensive against ‘separatists’ in the region. Civilian casualties have yet to be counted. The attacks have caused a refugee crisis, with thousands of Papuans fleeing their homes and farms to escape the Boeing aircraft.

“Wipe them out, we can talk about human rights later” was the injunction given by the head of Indonesia’s parliament, Bambang Soesatyo, on April 26, as the Indonesian parliament declared the ‘OPM’ or Papuan Independence Organisation to be a terrorist group. Additional troops, including Australian trained anti-terrorist D88 forces, are deploying to West Papua daily. Boeing profits from attacks on West Papua through lucrative sales to the Indonesian army, TNI.

Boeing is poised to sell 36 new F15EX fighter jets to Indonesia’s air force after meeting with Indonesia’s Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto in October 2020. The F15EX deal, negotiated after the Trump administration dropped a visa ban against Prabowo, is worth $USD billions to Boeing. Prabowo had been banned from entering the US under legislation prohibiting known war criminals from obtaining visas. Now Defence Minister, Prabowo was once head of the notorious special forces unit Kopassus and stands accused of multiple crimes against humanity.

Activists in Boeing’s Brisbane office are calling on the weapons manufacturer to cancel the deal with TNI, accusing the company of ‘collateral murder’.
